ACTING IN
CLOSE UP - SCHOOL OF ACTING
A Modern Approach For Today's Actor
To date, the majority of acting
classes base their techniques and methods on a theatrical tradition. They
teach actors the basic aspects of their craft by using various on-stage
techniques and, perhaps, showcasing their talent through shows and performances
on stage.
However, the modern actor must
be aware that, in modern times, the majority of their work, especially
professionally paid work, will be in front of a camera for television, film,
corporate and commercials. An actor must therefore first train in acting
as a stage actor, then, if they are aware of the often different and specialised
needs of camera work, re-train on a course or workshop specialising in acting
for camera in order to understand how to work and compete in the modern market
place. I, myself, have
been teaching actors this way for many years, and also offer an additional
workshop specifically designed to teach actors the needs of the camera.
One day a student made a simple
comment that made me realise that the traditional 'stage' methods of teaching
actors is not necessarily appropriate for today's actors or the modern
market. I realised that not all actors today want to work in theatre, and
certainly, theatrical opportunities for apprenticeship, not to mention
professional experience, are few and far between in theatre. However, the
recent and burgeoning 'digital revolution' has created a multitude of
opportunities for the student or apprentice actor.
Further, through my work both
day-to-day and in a private situation, combined with my learning and expereinces
over the many years of my career, I have developed techniques and a more
personal approach to the development and education of actors.
The combination of these two
ideas has led me to the 'Acting In Close Up School of Modern Acting' which will
combine techniques with the focus always on the fact that actors will be mostly
working on camera during their careers.
